How to Monitor Website Uptime and Catch Downtime Before It Affects Visitors

A website can appear healthy while an important page is quietly failing. Your homepage may load normally even though customers cannot sign in, submit a contact form, or complete checkout.

Website uptime monitoring helps you detect these problems before they affect more visitors. Instead of waiting for a customer complaint, an uptime checker tests important URLs regularly and alerts you when a page stops responding.

Why monitoring only the homepage is not enough

The homepage is only one part of a website. It may be served from a cache while application pages depend on databases, APIs, authentication services, or payment providers. For example, an ecommerce homepage can remain online while a database problem takes checkout down. Visitors can browse products but cannot complete purchases.

Page monitoring exposes this difference. It identifies the checkout, login, contact, dashboard, or other specific URL that failed while the rest of the website remains available.

UP, DEGRADED, and DOWN website status

UP

All monitored pages are responding successfully.

DEGRADED

Some monitored pages work while others fail. The website is partly available, but an important visitor action may be blocked.

DOWN

All monitored pages are failing, suggesting a site-wide outage, hosting problem, DNS failure, or deployment issue.

Monitor response time as well as availability

A successful response does not always mean a good visitor experience. Response time monitoring can reveal database pressure, overloaded servers, or slow external services before a page becomes completely unavailable. See the AliveRadar overview for a closer look at multi-page status and response-time monitoring.

Website monitoring setup checklist

  • Add the homepage as a basic availability check.
  • Add login, checkout, contact, dashboard, and other critical pages.
  • Monitor separate URLs independently.
  • Enable email alerts for page failures.
  • Review response time alongside uptime.
  • Confirm who receives alerts and who responds.
  • Review monitored URLs after redesigns, migrations, or route changes.
